Challenging Men for the Race….

Monday, March 19th, 2007

by: Bob Reccord

One of my favorite places to go is the North Carolina mountains and one of my favorite things to do is speaking to men. Last weekend I was able to do both. I’ll be retreating with several hundred men in one of the most beautiful mountain settings I know. A group I had the privilege of speaking to 2 years ago…and they asked me back!!! I pray God will meet us on the mountain! I’ll let you know what happens next week.

Bob Reccord Endorsement - Danny Singleton

Wednesday, March 14th, 2007

by: Danny Singleton - Pastor Easthaven Baptist Church

This note is to affirm the ministry of my friend Bob Reccord. Recently the Lord prompted me to lead our church to Get Ready for Easter by moving our Sunday’s to Monday nights leading up to Easter. Bob Reccord was our first guest preacher in these five meetings. The people in our church as well as the many who chose to honor us by attending from the churches in the
surrounding five counties are still raving about the evening. The song says it better than I could…surely the presence of the Lord fills this
place.

Monday night was awesome, but Tuesday morning, Bob volunteered to stay over and host the pastors of the area for a special challenge. Our pastors still phone me and beg for more of that type of teaching. Few men have loved me like Bob has in his giving to the church I serve and the community I am trying to reach for Christ. What a partner in the gospel ministry he has
been for me.

Great preacher, wonderful communicator, dynamic storyteller, humble giving servant…all are attributes of this faithful servant. However, nothing I could say would surpass that this man loves his Savior, his wife, his children, his call and his friends. What a joy it is to be a friend of Bob Reccord’s, but that doesn’t make me special…every pastor and church leader is his friend. I am just one of thousands and I am so glad to be one.

I Finally Got To Harvard - Bob Reccord

Wednesday, March 14th, 2007

by: Bob Reccord

Last Sunday I had a GREAT time in a place where I never thought I would be…probably everybody I know never thought I would, either. Walking across the campus of Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass. I couldn’t help but feel that I needed to be reverentially quiet. After all, this was the cradle of American higher education. And everyone there was a brain…except me of course.

I walked with my friend Paul Kim who pastors just a short jog away. And he has started over 25 churches around the world. Having started one in Berkley, Calif. and pastored it for several years—ministering to the campuses of both Stanford and Berkley—he felt God’s leadership to leave it in the capable hands of a man he had mentored and moved to Harvard.

I wish you could have seen the congregation I was privileged to address—undergraduate and graduate students of Harvard, MIT, Wellesley, Boston College, and many more that I can’t even remember. And as a Caucasian I was in the vast majority. The vast majority were from all over the world….which makes sense, since today almost 1 out of 10 American citizens are foreign born. It was like seeing a foreshadowing of Revelation 7!

And we had a fabulous time. I’m sure that all those “brains” felt like they were listening to an 8th grader (me  ) but they were kind to me regardless. We celebrated the church’s 26th Anniversary, and then I stayed around listening to some of the most gifted and bright people I’ve ever been around and how they were training to be On Mission for the Lord Jesus Christ and change the world from the leadership level…across the world. And I left feeling a lot more hopeful about tomorrow…with upcoming leaders like this.

By the way, they gave me a Harvard sweater…and I find I feel brighter by just putting it on! And by the way, are you praying that God calls some of the most gifted and talented to become world changers? If not, start today. And, thank you Paul Kim for having a heart for the brightest and gifted!! Keep it up…and don’t ever leave the shadow cast by an icon called Harvard!

UNEXPECTED IMPACT

There are so many times when all of us go about our normal life, taking advantage of the opportunities and trying to do what we do with to the best of our gifts and abilities. But we don’t have any idea the extent of what is happening as God works, way beyond our awareness.

I just had the opportunity to go back to Albany, New York where I had the privilege of speaking for Promise Keepers last year. It was one of the most vibrant cities in my memory bank. So, I was looking forward to going back and speaking at an area men’s conference there.

But as much as I enjoyed the speaking…and as great as God was to significant impact a lot of men, two events that happened this week left me speechless. A great young man brought Nick to meet me. He said Nick had been looking forward to seeing me. When I asked why, since to my knowledge I hadn’t met Nick, I was told he acknowledged Christ as his Savior and Lord when I spoke last year at Promise Keepers. Then the gentleman told me, “And that has meant everything to him. Especially since he is going through some really tough times now.”

When I asked what it was, I learned that his parents were divorcing and he wanted me to pray with him. I had the privilege of putting my arms around him and praying for him…and receiving a hug from him for having played a little part in his coming to Christ.

I was then told by on of the volunteer coordinators from last year that when PK was over in Albany he learned that a gang member had surrendered his life to Christ the night I gave the invitation…and then surrendered his gang colors. That had happened with a Crip in Raleigh…and now I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. It happened TWICE last year, including Albany.

So, I returned to Atlanta reminded that we should never take for granted what God may be doing…event when we are not aware. Our job is to be faithful, do our very best…and leave the results in God’s hands. So, why don’t you thank God for how He is using you……..even when you don’t know it!

I NEVER CEASE TO BE SURPRISED BY GOD

I recently returned from Brookhaven, Mississippi where I had the delight of meeting D. D. The first moment I met him I thought I was meeting someone from The Greatful Dead. But as I road back with D. D. and four other guys who had flown to pick me up in Atlanta for a speaking engagement an amazing story unfolded.

D. D. sat on the plane with me, and his friend Chris who is a bank president, Kenny who is an executive for the electrical company and Keith who owns several businesses. What a great group of guys. But it was D. D. who captivated me. He obviously loves the Lord, yet if many folks would have simply seen him on the street, the traditional church goer would have probably not thought so. Dressed in jeans, a shirt that was like a cross between a T-shirt and a football jersey, and hair down to his shoulders….while balding on top…D. D. left the impressing that he didn’t take life too seriously. Or anyone…or anything.

As the story unfolded I discovered he had only been a Christian for 6 years. Prior to that he had been an alcoholic…drinking often and heavily. But amidst a life that was anything but a poster card church member, he was invited to church for a special event. A amazingly he went…and the rest is history. Christ captured D. D. during that visit, and today…D. D. is a leader in the church! What a story. What a Savior!! And I’m a better, and blessed man, for having shared a plane flight with Chris, Keith, Kenny…and a guy they love, and so do I now, D. D.

So do you ever find it’s easy to jump to mental conclusions just by appearances? Be careful, they can really throw you for a loop!

Ronald Reagan was one of my heroes…and everyone of us need those. I well remember when he died, I was sitting at home watching the funeral procession moving through the streets of Washington where he would lay in state at the Capital, and suddenly I realized that tears were rolling down my cheeks.

I realized we had lost a man who, regardless of the circumstances, always had a smile in his heart…and usually evidenced on his face. And a man who looked at even the toughest of circumstances through the eyes of humor.

When an assassination attempt was made on his life he was rushed to the hospital and whisked into emergency surgery, where looking up at the surgical teams he quipped, “I hope you are all Republicans!”

Another time he would share with a smile, “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: ‘I’m from the government, and I’m here to help.’”

He must have understood Bill Cosby’s maxim: “If you find humor in anything, you can survive it.”

How about you?

Southwest Airlines found that “happy” customers are repeat customers…so, they added humor and fun to the job descriptions of all their employees. Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream has a “Joy Gang” that is responsible for finding ways to make the store and company atmosphere “light and fun”.

So try it—humor—you’ll like it! It will release endorphins and thus improve your immune system. But, it will also relieve stress and draw positive people to you like a magnet.
